About the Fellowship:

The Outdoor Education Fellowship at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center is a year-long, immersive training program designed for individuals passionate about teaching, leadership, and the outdoors. Fellows gain over 400 hours of hands-on teaching experience, leading inquiry-based outdoor programs for diverse audiences while developing strong facilitation and leadership skills.

Fellows also have the opportunity to earn graduate credit through Hamline University.

Responsibilities:

Outdoor Educator (45%)
  • Teach hands-on classes for students (grades 4–8)
  • Lead outdoor adventure, science, and cultural history programming
  • Facilitate engaging, inquiry-based learning experiences
Liaison (20%)
  • Support visiting groups throughout their stay
  • Coordinate logistics and daily schedules
  • Ensure a welcoming, organized experience
Professional Development (20%)
  • Participate in seminars, mentorship, and coursework
  • Build skills in teaching, interpretation, and program design
  • Engage in feedback, reflection, and collaboration
Seasonal Operations (15%)
  • Assist with animal care, land stewardship, and campus projects
Summer Camp Leadership (Seasonal Shift)
  • Lead overnight and day camp programs
  • Facilitate activities and supervise campers
  • Create a safe, engaging camp environment

Training & Development:

  • 3 weeks of intensive initial training
  • Ongoing class-specific trainings
  • Weekly seminars in teaching techniques, natural history, and interpretation
  • Optional certifications:
    • Graduate credits (Hamline University)
    • Certified Interpretive Guide (NAI)

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Age 21+ by start date
  • Ability to commit to full program term
  • Comfortable living in a shared residential setting
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • CPR/First Aid certified (or willingness to obtain)
  • Comfortable with outdoor activities (hiking, water, ropes courses)
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with youth or teaching
  • Background in outdoor recreation or environmental education
  • Public speaking or leadership experience

    Counselor & Outdoor Educators are responsible for working closely with the year-long Environmental Education Fellows in creating and maintaining a safe, fun, and educational environment for program participants. Staff members in this role balance their time between supervising campers, collaborating with other camp staff, co-leading adventure programming, and managing activity supplies.
